On Tuesday, the embassy’s hotline received 14 calls from Vietnamese stuck in Bali asking for support as Indonesia has raised the warning of Agung volcano’s eruption to the maximum level.

According to Nguyen Thanh Giang, an embassy official, four among these 40 people had left Bali for Surabaya by road and sea. The remaining are still waiting for connecting flights.

“Until now, the local authority has not yet called for evacuation. Therefore, the embassy is guiding Vietnamese on how to leave the island. Once they reach Surabaya and Lombok, there will be flights to other destinations,” Giang said.

He also said the actual number of Vietnamese stranded may be higher as they were almost all self-sufficient travelers.

There were 24 Vietnamese, part of nine travelling groups, reported to be stranded in Bali on Monday.

In addition, two Vietnamese expats live in Bali but not in the dangerous area.

The volcanic eruption, meanwhile, continued with ash, tephra and lava being expelled. The Indonesian authorities have evacuated thousands of people living in the neighbouring areas to more than 200 camps on the island. – VNS
