Sapa’s weather is hit or miss.  It’s just like a temperamental teenager who say yes then change to no in no time. The average annual temperature is 15.4 degrees Celsius, the average temperature is 18 – 20oC in summer months, the winter months 10 – 12oC. The maximum temperature is 33oC in April in lowlands. The lowest temperature is in February next year, the lowest in January is 0oC (especially there were record years of minus 3.2oC).

However, due to the topography of the different regions, and different ecological zones, temperatures vary at the same period of time.

* Sunshine

The average annual sunshine hours of Sa Pa vary from 1,400 to 1,460 hours. The number of sunny days is irregular, the number of sunny hours is highest in summers, the least is in October from 30 – 40 hours.

Moisture: Average humidity is 85-90% annually, the humidity is lowest in April about 65% – 70%. Due to foggy climate and high altitude, the more far-flung the valley is, the damper/wetter climate presents.

The average annual precipitation is about 2,762 mm with the highest is 3,484 mm and unevenly distributed over the months. The rain also depends on the area’s terrain. Rainy season starts from May to October accounting for 80% of the total rainfall. The rainy months have the average rainfall of 50 – 100 mm/month. Hail occurs in February, April, and November.

* Thunderstorms

Happen in the summer. Rains and flash floods in steep terrain are the severe aftermaths.

Dew: Mist is very common in the year, especially in the winter with incredibly thick layers. There are also frost, ice, and snow during the heavy cold in the high mountains and valleys. Each period lasts 2-3 days and badly affects agricultural and forestry production.
